Who needs public transport in Rio? We divide between three user categories in Olympic City Transport Challenge. For each user category we provide a short description:
- Regular user
- Occasional user
Uses the public transport on a regular basis and knows the transport system well. He or she is sensitive to quality aspects such as service reliability and state of service. This user belongs to the background traffic and before the Olympics this user has to be informed about detours or other irregularities. During the Olympics it is important to influence his or her behavior to travel less to ensure a smooth traffic flow during the Olympics. After the games this user will benefit from improvements made to the public transport system. Most important increased reliability and improved state of service information, such as information about the actual service, time information and distortions, and less information about basic map and route information.
This user is dependent to use the public transport system but has not used the system before. He or she may or may not speak the local language. This user values ease of use and information. In the categories of the Olympics the group belongs to the primary traffic. In the period before the Olympics the user is not present, or only in smaller groups. During the Olympics he or she does not have any knowledge of the transport system and therefore needs to have access to basic and advanced information about how to use the public transport system. After the Olympics more tourists will visit Rio de Janeiro, increasing the passenger totals of the public transport system.
This user is familiar to the public transport system but does not use it on a regular basis. He or she speaks the local language is not a stranger to use other modes of transport. This user primarily values reliability and comfort. In the categories of the Olympic games the group belongs to the background traffic. In the stage before the Olympic games this group has to be informed about detours or other irregularities. During the Olympics it is important to influence his or her behavior to ensure a smooth traffic flow. After the Olympics this group could potentially use public transport more due to positive experiences and improvements made on the public transport system.
